SmacoGlas vs. WMF TopServe: Which glass box is the better choice for you?

Dec 20, 2023by Janine Krause

Glass is a great material for storing food because it is durable, recyclable and free of harmful substances. But not all glass boxes are the same.

With SmacoGlas we want to try to compare it with a giant: WMF TopServe!

First of all: Of course we are not neutral ;) After all, we are convinced of our product. And not just because we invented it, but because we've been using it every single day for over 2 years. But we can address the advantages and disadvantages of both systems as neutrally as possible.

SmacoGlas vs. WMF TopServe

Both offer high-quality glass products that differ in a few ways. We will compare the products based on 5 criteria: material, design, function, stackability and sustainability. In the end, you can decide which glass box better suits your needs and values.

Material:

Both products are made from 100% glass, which is robust, recyclable and free of harmful substances. However, the lids are different: SmacoGlas has a stackable glass lid with a tongue and groove principle that ensures an almost airtight seal. WMF TopServe has a stainless steel lid with a silicone seal and a freshness valve that regulates the supply of oxygen and moisture. The SmacoGlas glass lid allows you to see the contents of the box without removing the lid, while the WMF TopServe stainless steel lid provides better thermal insulation.

Design:

Both products have a beautiful and elegant design that can be used both at home and on the go. The SmacoGlas box has a rectangular shape that saves space in the refrigerator, while the WMF TopServe bowl has a conical and oval shape that is well suited for serving, but due to the curves it wastes a significant amount of space in the refrigerator. The SmacoGlas box has natural optimal ventilation and elevations in the base for cold cuts, which, together with the solid construction, maintains the freshness and quality of the food for a long time, while the WMF TopServe bowl has a removable draining rack that prevents the food from getting condensation in it come into contact. While the Wmf TopServe requires a grid for using cold cuts etc. to keep the food away from condensation, the SmacoGlas cold cuts box does not require this, because with SmacoGlas no condensation forms in the first place.

Stackability:

Stackability is an important aspect of food storage as it saves space and creates order. The SmacoGlas cold cuts boxes and the WMF TopServe bowls are both stackable, but in different ways.

The SmacoGlas cold cuts boxes have a stackable glass lid with a tongue and groove principle that ensures an almost airtight seal. The boxes have straight walls, which means they can be stacked on top of each other with or without lids and, thanks to the tongue and groove principle, they can also be stacked very high without it becoming tippy or falling down. In addition, further stacking can be carried out on the lid, so you can not only use the lid as a lid, but also as a separating layer for greasy things, such as meat salad or the like, without the box stacked on top of it becoming greasy.

The WMF TopServe bowls can only be stacked with lids as they are smaller at the bottom than at the top. The bowls have an oval shape that is good for serving. The trays provide less stability when stacked as they can slip or tip over more easily.

In summary, the SmacoGlas cold cuts boxes offer better stackability than the WMF TopServe trays, as they save more space, offer more security and allow for more flexibility. The WMF TopServe bowls are more suitable for serving than for stacking.

Function:

Both products are dishwasher and microwave safe. However, the SmacoGlas box is officially not suitable for the oven or freezer, while the WMF TopServe bowl is oven-safe up to 180°C and freezer-safe up to -20°C. The SmacoGlas Box is a sustainable system that can also be used by retailers as a deposit system that saves money and avoids plastic waste by replacing the use of plastic packaging at the deli counter or in the unpackaged store. The WMF TopServe bowl is a 3-in-1 solution for preparing, serving and storing that allows for clever and effortless handling.

Sustainability:

Both products are environmentally friendly as they are made from recycled glass that can be reused. However, the SmacoGlas box is even more sustainable because its entire concept with the SmacoGlas set and the matching bag avoids the use of plastic packaging, which can pollute the environment and endanger health. The SmacoGlas Box is also more customer friendly as it saves money and reduces waste. In addition, the SmacoGlas cold cuts box is made of classic soda-lime glass that is 100% recyclable and can be disposed of in the waste glass container, while the WMF TopServe is made of borosilicate glass and must not be disposed of in the waste glass container. Borosilicate glass disrupts the recycling process and should therefore be disposed of at a recycling center or in the residual waste, which is not very sustainable.

So you can see that both products have their advantages and disadvantages depending on what you prioritize. The SmacoGlas box is more suitable for those who value sustainability, freshness, space saving and a beautiful table setting, while the WMF TopServe bowl is more suitable for those who value thermal insulation, heat resistance and large volume.
